Over the weekend, Hark Vineyards, a family-owned winery in Earlysville, won the Monticello Cup.
Their 2023 Cabernet Franc was named the Monticello Cup winner at the 34th annual Gold Medal Celebration at Boar's Head. It's the highest honor awarded among the 44 wineries of the Monticello Wine Trail.
But here’s another story you may have missed …
Last month, eight Virginia producers showed at the London Wine Fair — one of the biggest wine trade events in the world — and the reception from top UK buyers was strong. More on that in “Wine News” below.

Bottle of the Week
Hark Vineyards — Cabernet Franc 2023
Monticello AVA • Cabernet Franc • $38

Why it’s here
The 2023 Cabernet Franc is made to let the fruit speak — aged 10 months in equal parts concrete and neutral oak, so there's nowhere to hide and no wood to lean on. What comes through is the grape itself: white pepper, dark cherry, anise. 13.7% alcohol and only 525 cases produced.
Tasting notes
🌶️ White pepper • 🍒 Dark cherry • 🌿 Anise • 🪨 Clean mineral finish

Virginia wine lands in London
Virginia Wine organized a dedicated tasting and buyer debate at the London Wine Fair bringing together eight top buyers and importers alongside producers including King Family Vineyards, Southwest Mountains Vineyards, Lightwell Survey Winery, Paradise Springs Winery, Rosemont of Virginia, The Williamsburg Winery, and Commonwealth Crush.
Ten years ago, a similar event in the UK drew mixed feedback on both style and pricing. This time, the wines have caught up with the market.
Their consensus? The wines have matured, the prices make sense, and Petit Manseng in particular has genuine potential to find a UK audience. Petit Verdot and hybrid grapes also stood out.
"There is not a bad wine in the room," said one buyer, who admitted she'd arrived with "low expectations."
The Buyer’s full account of the event is worth reading.
